Fabric Shaver: Save a Life… The Life of your Sweaters, Sweatpants, Hats and Other Knitted Garments!
Today I saved my son's super cute green knitted sweater that I got him for St. Patrick's Day, his birthday. I also saved a pair of sweatpants my sister gave me and a pair of my son's athletic jogging pants.
I got a fabric shaver for nine or $10 online however I got my first fabric shaver at the dollar store for $1. I haven't seen much difference in quality between the dollar store version and the one I got from Walmart. My husband threw away my dollar store fabric shaver thinking that it wasn't being used. I picked up this fabric shaver from Walmart, online, simply because if I added one more thing to my cart it would change my $35 shipping to free shipping. So the fabric shaver was basically free when I bought it from Walmart online.
(It's amazing how cheap these things are considering I would never be able to make this from household items around the house. Same thing with cars. I know they're expensive but considering how much it would cost for me to learn how to make one myself with fresh drilled oil for my very own backyard, it's actually pretty reasonable.)
It takes two AA batteries.
I found that this is a great way to occupy my boys while I'm folding laundry. I trust them to use the fabric shaver (I feel that it's pretty safe since it has a guard) however it depends on your comfort level with your kids. If they're able to unscrew the guard, then they could be exposed to the blades underneath.
We have a bench next to our laundry room to lay clothes out flat while I watch them use the fabric shaver. If they were younger, I would probably bring my load of laundry to my bed so that we can sit on the bed together and have the kids within arms length while using it. My kids tend to be on the cautious side anyway and understand that they don't want to touch sharp things, and I have explained the fabric shaver to them. So for me it works great, but it's up to your own judgment.
It's also great for peacoats, bras, and any other clothing that gets pilled up with fuzz balls.
Did I mention it's super satisfying? You might have to fight the temptation to take it from your kids and use it yourself.
